Animal-Assisted Therapy

Animal-Assisted Therapy: Healing with Heart and Paws

Animal-assisted therapy (AAT) brings the unique bond between humans and animals into the therapeutic process, offering a powerful and transformative experience.

What is Animal-Assisted Therapy?

AAT involves the use of a trained animal as part of a therapeutic treatment plan. It’s a goal-oriented intervention directed by a qualified professional. The animal acts as a bridge, fostering connection and creating a safe and supportive environment for clients.

How it Works:

  • Emotional Support: Animals offer unconditional love and acceptance, reducing feelings of isolation and anxiety.
  • Stress Reduction: Interacting with animals can lower blood pressure and cortisol levels, promoting relaxation and a sense of calm.
  • Improved Communication: Animals can facilitate communication and build trust, particularly for individuals who struggle with social interaction.
  • Increased Motivation: The presence of an animal can increase motivation and engagement in therapy.
  • Sensory Stimulation: Petting and interacting with animals provides sensory stimulation, which can be particularly beneficial for individuals with sensory processing difficulties.

Who Can Benefit?

AAT can be beneficial for a wide range of individuals, including those experiencing:

  • Anxiety and depression
  • PTSD and traumatic events
  • Social anxiety and isolation
  • Chronic illness

The Human-Animal Bond:

The power of AAT lies in the unique bond between humans and animals. Animals have a natural ability to sense our emotions and offer comfort and support in a way that humans sometimes cannot.

If you’re looking for a unique and effective approach to therapy, animal-assisted therapy may be a valuable option.

Note: Animal-Assisted Therapy is not being offered at this time.

In Memoriam

It’s a Josh von Puppydeaux (“Josh”)

October 26, 2011 – April 12, 2025

Picture of Josh, a Miniature Schnauzer who works as a therapy dog.

Josh, a Miniature Schnauzer, worked with me in sessions for more than a decade. He brought hope, healing, and comfort on hard days to people of all ages.

Outside of work, Josh loved nothing more than spending time with his family, no matter where they were. Josh was a good dog, a faithful friend, and a dependable coworker. He is, and will always be, missed.
